Industry Standards for Passenger Transit, Rail Vehicle Specifications

Wayside Interface

Noise Impact to Wayside

The nature of passenger transit trains and their operation through populated areas requires that the acoustic noise impact to the wayside be kept within acceptable levels. For reference, the accompanying interior noise measurement standard is also included here.

When specifying noise measurements, it is important to establish all of the criteria to obtain the desired results. Various measurements should be taken with a baseline value for the vehicle operation as well as maximum values for any additional operating or intermittently operating equipment.

Please note: additional standards for human exposure to vehicle interior noise are also discussed in the Ergonomics section.

Standard: ISO 3095 - Acoustics: Measurement of Noise Emitted by Rail Bound Vehicles
Purpose:

This standard specifies the conditions for obtaining reproducible and comparable measurements of the noise level and the noise spectrum emitted by rail vehicles. There are also specifications for exhaust or air-intake noise measurements for both stationary and accelerating vehicles, as well as measurements at stations, bridges and tunnels. A diagram of preferred locations for measurements is also provided.

This standard provides measurement procedures, microphone positioning (distance and heights), train speeds, etc. with default microphone positions of 7.5 meters from centerline of track. Other distances may be used but must be specified.

Criteria: Specify standard, train speed, measurement distance, and measurement value.
Usage:

... sound levels per ISO 3095, Train speed of 80km/h, measurement distance of 25m, 70 dBa
... sound levels per ISO 3095, stationary train, measurement distance of 7.5m, 65 dBa

Standard: ISO 3381 - Acoustics: Measurement of Noise Inside Rail Bound Vehicles
Purpose: This standard specifies the conditions for obtaining reproducible and comparable measurements of the noise level and the noise spectrum inside of rail vehicles. This comprehensive standard provides a full range of measurements for both moving and stationary trains, in a variety of conditions (e.g. open air, tunnels, stations, etc.), with a variety of microphone positions.
Criteria: Specify standard, and desired criteria - (train speed, equipment conditions, measurement heights, measurement values, etc.).
Usage: ... sound levels per ISO 3095, Train speed of 80km/h, measurement height of 1.2m, 65 dBa
... sound levels per ISO 3095, stationary train, measurement height of 1.5m, 60 dBa
