Bonding

Adhesives and adhesive tapes have become a common method of component attachment in a wide variety of applications, including sub component construction, for vehicles produced for use in the passenger rail industry. Adhesives and double-stick adhesive tapes can be effectively used if the joint design and the adhesive selection is correct, however, if not properly used, they will fail after a very short time in service. The following standards provide guidelines for effective and reliable adhesive bonding.

Standard: ASTM D2651 - Standard Guide for Preparation of Metal Surfaces for Adhesive Bonding
Purpose: This guide covers procedures that have proved satisfactory for preparing various wrought metal surfaces for adhesive bonding. It does not address the preparation of cast metals.
Criteria: Specify preparation in compliance with standard
Usage: ...Prior to bonding the surface shall be prepared according to ASTM D2651
Standard: MIL-HDBK-691B - Adhesive Bonding
Purpose: This handbook provides basic and fundamental information on adhesives and related bonding processes for the guidance of engineers and designers.
Criteria: Specify this handbook to be used as a basis for adhesive joint design, and adhesive selection guide.
Usage: ...Adhesive selection and bonded joint design shall consider MIL-HDBK-691B
