Industry Standards for Passenger Transit, Rail Vehicle Specifications

Electrical

Wire and Cable

The following standards are used to specify the various types of wire and cable used in passenger rail transit. Please note, that these standards replace several obsolete standards.

In addition to the below standards, the American Public Transit Association (APTA) has prepared Recommended Practices for the construction of passenger rail vehicles:

  • APTA RP-E-002 Recommended Practice for Wiring of Passenger Equipment
  • APTA RP-E-004 Recommended Practice for Gap and Creepage Distance
  • APTA RP-E-009 Recommended Practice for Wire Used on Passenger Rolling Stock
Standard: ASTM B174 - Standard Specification for Bunch-Stranded Copper Conductors for Electrical Conductors
Purpose: This specification covers bare bunch-stranded conductors made from round copper wires, either uncoated or coated with tin, lead, or lead-alloy for use as electrical conductors
Criteria: Specify standard name, Class, AWG size.
Usage: ASTM B174, Class X, X.X AWG (ASTM B174, Class K, 16 AWG)
Standard: ASTM B33 - Standard Specification for Tinned Soft or Annealed Copper Wire for Electrical Purposes
Purpose: This specification covers tinned, round, soft or annealed copper wire for electrical purposes. This is a wire specification that provides criteria for wire based upon wire size.
Criteria: Specify standard name, AWG size.
Usage: ASTM B33, X.X AWG
Standard: NEMA WC 70 / ICEA S-95-658 - Standard for Nonshielded Power Cables Rated 2000 Volts or Less for Use in The Distribution of Electrical Energy
Purpose: This standard covers the requirements for conductors, installations, jackets, and protective coverings as well as general construction and dimensional details common to most standard nonshielded types of wires and cables rated up to 2000 volts.
Criteria: Specify standard name, desired criteria if any (This standard defines in detail, various properties of wire and cables, including size, material, application, and testing. This standard may be applied generally or specifically by specifying various parameters.)
Usage: ....wire and cable shall meet the requirements of NEMA WC 70.
Standard: NEMA WC 71 / ICEA S-96-659 - Standard For Nonshielded Power Cables Rated 2001-5000 Volts for Use in The Distribution of Electrical Energy
Purpose: This standard covers the requirements for conductors, installations, jackets, and protective coverings as well as general construction and dimensional details common to most standard nonshielded types of wires and cables rated 2001 to 5000 volts.
Criteria: Specify standard name, desired criteria if any (This standard defines in detail, various properties of wire and cables, including size, material, application, and testing. This standard may be applied generally or specifically by specifying various parameters.)
Usage: Wire and cable shall meet the requirements of NEMA WC 71.
Standard: ASTM D470 - Standard Test Methods for Crosslinked Insulations and Jackets for Wire and Cable
Purpose: These test methods cover procedures for testing crosslinked insulations and jackets for wire and cable. To determine the test to be made on the particular insulation or jacket, reference should be made to the product specification for that type. These test methods do not apply to the class of products known as flexible cords. This standard is frequently called out by wire and cable specifications, with specific physical test property requirements.
Criteria: Specify Standard, physical property test performance criteria.
Usage: ASTM D470, physical property test performance criteria
Standard: SAE-AS22759/6 : Wire, Electrical, Fluorocarbon-Insulated, Abrasion Resistant Extruded PTFE, Nickel-Coated Copper Conductor, 600 Volt
Purpose: This specification replaces MIL-W-22759/6B, and covers fluoropolymer - insulated single conductor electrical wires made with tin-coated, silver-coated, or nickel-coated conductors of copper or copper alloy as specified in the applicable specification sheet. The fluoropolymer insulation of these wires may be polytetrafluoroethylene (TFE), fluorinated ethylene propylene (FTP), polyvinylidean fluoride (PVF2), ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene copolymer (ETFE,) or other fluoropolymer resin. The fluoropolymer may be used alone or in combination with other insulation materials.
Criteria: Specify compliance with standard, add additional criteria if desired.
Usage: ... shall be manufactured according to SAE-AS22759/6
Standard: MIL-W-81044 - Wire, Electric, Crosslinked Polyalkene, Crosslinked Alkine-Imide Polymer, or Polyarylene Insulated, Copper or Copper Alloy
Purpose: This specification covers single conductor electric wires made as specified in the applicable specification sheet with tin-coated, silver-coated, or nickel-coated copper or copper alloy conductors insulated with cross-linked polyalkene, cross-linked alkane-imide polymer, or polyarylene. The cross-linked polyalkene, cross-linked alkane-imide polymer, or polyarylene may be used alone or in combination with other insulation materials as specified in the specification sheet.
Criteria: Specify compliance with standard, add additional criteria if desired.
Usage: ... shall be manufactured according to MIL-W-81044
