Industry Standards for Passenger Transit, Rail Vehicle Specifications

Electrical

General

There are a number of standards covering electrical components and installations. The following is a list of the most commonly cited standards for passenger transit rail vehicle applications.

Standard: APTA SS-E-005-98 - Standard for Grounding and Bonding
Purpose: This standard provides minimum requirements for grounding and bonding on passenger rail vehicles. It includes grounding return connections, grounding, bonding, and passenger exposure. It does not address ground brush arrangements or equipment ground fault protection which vary according to application
Criteria: Specify compliance with standard
Usage: ... shall meet the requirements of APTA SS-E-005-98
Standard: NEC - National Electric Code (NFPA 70)
Purpose: The National Electrical Code provides specifications for design, alteration, modification, construction, maintenance, inspections, and testing electrical systems and equipment.
Criteria: Specify compliance with standard
Usage: ... shall comply with the requirements of NEC (NFPA 70)
Standard: IEEE 11 - Rotating Electric Machinery For Rail And Road Vehicles
Purpose: This standard applies to rotating electric machinery, which forms part of the propulsion, and major auxiliary equipment on internally and externally powered electrically propelled rail and road vehicles. Major auxiliary equipment includes equipment such as a blower and compressor motors, motor generator, and motor alternator sets, auxiliary generators and exciters, usually larger than 3 kW. This standard provides specifications, as well as a variety of tests.
Criteria: Specify compliance with standard, specific criteria (if desired)
Usage: ... shall be in accordance with IEEE 11
Standard: IEEE 383 - Standard for Type Test of Class IE, Electric Cables, Field Splices, and Connections for Nuclear Power Generating Stations
Purpose: This standard provides direction for establishing type tests, which may be used in qualifying electoral cables, Field splices, and other connections. This specification is normally used in rail applications to provide insulation test criteria.
Criteria: Specify compliance with standard, specific criteria (if desired)
Usage: ... shall be in accordance with IEEE 383
Standard: IEC 60077 - Rules for Electric Traction Equipment
Purpose:

This International Standard specifies the general service conditions and requirements for all electric equipment installed in power circuits, auxiliary circuits, control and indicating circuits etc., on rolling stock.

This is a 5 part standard that covers;
Part 1: General service conditions and general rules,
Part 2: Electrotechnical components - General rules,
Part 3: Electrotechnical components - Rules for DC circuit-breakers,
Part 4: Electrotechnical components - Rules for AC circuit-breakers,
Part 5: Electrotechnical components - Rules for HV fuses

Criteria: This standard is a design guide for a wide variety of rail car systems, and may be applied in whole or in part. Additional criteria should be supplied along with the standard reference.
Usage: ... shall meet or exceed IEC 60077 (criteria)
Standard: IEC 60034-14 - Rotating Electrical Machines - Mechanical Vibration Of Certain Machines With Shaft Heights 56 Mm And Higher - Measurement, Evaluation And Limits Of Vibration Severity
Purpose:

This standard specifies the factory acceptance vibration test procedures and vibration limits for certain electrical machines under specified conditions, when uncoupled from any load. It is applicable to DC and three-phase AC machines, with shaft size of 56 mm and larger and rated output up to 50 MW, with operational speeds from 120 rpm up to and including 15,000 rpm. Values for displacement, velocity, and acceleration, are given for various vibration grades and mounting criteria. (Vibration grade A or B, rigid or suspension mounted, etc.)

Criteria: Specify the standard name, performance criteria
Usage: ... vibration shall conform to IEC 60034-14, (criteria)
Standard: IEC 60571 - Electronic Equipment Used On Rail Vehicles
Purpose:

This standard provides criteria for environmental, and electrical service conditions, reliability, maintainability, expected life, design, construction, components, etc. as applied to all electronic equipment used for control, regulation, protection, supply, etc., installed on rail vehicles and associated with low-voltage power supplies or batteries.

Criteria: Specify the standard name, and compliance (add criteria if desired - voltage, etc.)
Usage: ... shall conform to IEC 60571, (criteria as applicable)
